02 — What it is

The closest thing to a natural tooth.

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over 6 months. Once fused, an abutment connects a custom ceramic crown to the post, replicating the root, anchor, and visible tooth of what nature gave you. Unlike a bridge or denture, an implant doesn't rely on neighbouring teeth and doesn't shift over time.

Three parts, one tooth

The titanium post replaces the root and anchors into bone. The abutment is a small connector that screws onto the post and sits at the gumline. The crown is the visible ceramic tooth, matched to your shade and shape. Each part is independently replaceable if needed.

BioHorizons + ZirCAD Prime

We use BioHorizons exclusively for the implant post. An American manufacturer based in Birmingham, Alabama, with 25+ years of clinical history, FDA approval, and 95%+ ten-year success rates in independent studies. The crown on top is ZirCAD Prime zirconia from Ivoclar, the same brand family as our IPS e.max veneers. Same materials specified in US specialty practices, no private-label substitutes.

Bone-preserving by design

When a tooth is missing, the surrounding bone shrinks within months. That's how an unrestored gap turns into a sunken jawline over years. An implant transmits chewing force into the bone like a natural root, which keeps it stimulated and intact. Bridges and dentures don't.

All-on-6
From $11,500 per arch, all-in

Six implants per arch for added stability. The upgrade for patients with a heavy bite, more bone, or who want maximum long-term security.

  • 6 implants + fixed bridge
  • Better load distribution

Multiple-tooth gaps that don't need a full arch are quoted case-by-case. Sometimes 2 or 3 implants supporting a small bridge is the right call instead of replacing each tooth individually. Send us your CBCT scan or recent X-rays via WhatsApp for a precise plan.

05 — The procedure

Two trips for a single tooth. Three for a full arch.

Below is the standard single-tooth flow. Full-arch cases (All-on-4 and All-on-6) run across three trips over twelve months because of phased loading and a final fitting visit. Implants need time to fuse with bone and there is no shortcut for that, but the in-clinic time per trip is short, and you go home with a working temporary in most cases.

  1. Day 0 · WhatsApp

    Free virtual consult

Send recent X-rays or a panoramic if you have one. We send back a personalized plan with implant brand, count, expected bone work, and total cost within 24 hours.

  2. Trip 1 · Day 1

    CBCT scan & surgical plan

Bilingual driver picks you up at the airport. CBCT 3D scan to map bone density, nerve position, and sinus floor, then a final surgical plan including any bone graft if needed. You sign off on the plan and price before any procedure begins.

  3. Trip 1 · Day 2

    Implant placement surgery

Local anaesthetic, guided implant placement, optional bone graft or sinus lift. The procedure is shorter than most patients expect: 60 to 90 minutes for a single tooth, 2 to 3 hours for All-on-4. Same-day temporary tooth fitted where the case allows.

  4. Months 1–6 · Home

    Osseointegration

The titanium post fuses with the surrounding bone over 6 months. This is the single most important phase, and the one that can't be rushed. WhatsApp check-ins at week 1, month 1, and month 3. Soft-food diet for the first two weeks; normal diet by month two.

  5. Trip 2 · Day 1

    Abutment & crown design

Healing check, abutment placed, digital impressions taken. Our in-house lab fabricates the final crown within hours. No third-party lab, no shipping delay between scan and delivery.

  6. Trip 2 · Day 2

    Final crown & home

Crown tried in for shape and shade approval, then bonded to the abutment. Bite checked and balanced. Final photos, aftercare kit, driver to the airport. Multi-year warranty and WhatsApp follow-up continue from home.

08 — Aftercare

Caring for an implant: your first year and beyond.

The titanium post is built to last a lifetime, but the bone and gum around it need the same care as a natural tooth, sometimes more. The habits below protect the investment.

01

The first 48 hours

Soft foods only: soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs. No alcohol, no smoking, no hot drinks for 24 hours. Cold compresses 20 minutes on, 20 off, for the first day to control swelling. Slight bleeding for the first few hours is normal.

02

The osseointegration window

Months 1–6 is when the implant fuses with bone. Avoid biting hard objects on that side, skip ice and crusty bread, and stick to the antibiotics and rinses we send you home with. Pain past day 4 is unusual: message us on WhatsApp the same day.

03

Brushing & flossing

Soft-bristled brush, twice a day. Floss daily; implant floss or interdental brushes work better than string for the gumline around the abutment. Avoid charcoal and whitening toothpastes; they don't help and they're abrasive.

04

Stop smoking

Smokers have 2–3× the implant failure rate of non-smokers, primarily during osseointegration. If you're a smoker, we strongly recommend stopping for the 6 months around your treatment. We won't refuse to treat you, but the warranty doesn't cover smoking-related failure.

05

Cleanings every 6 months

Twice-yearly hygienist visits, same as before. Tell them you have an implant so they use a non-metallic scaler at the abutment. We coordinate with your local dentist if anything looks off at a routine cleaning.

06

Night guard if you grind

Bruxism is one of the leading causes of late implant complications. The constant force can loosen the abutment screw or fracture the crown. If your dentist sees wear or your partner says you grind, we make a custom night guard before you fly home.

09 — Questions

Implant questions, straight answers.

The questions we hear most from US, Canadian, and UK patients considering implants in Colombia.

How much do dental implants cost in Colombia?

A single implant at Colombia Care Dental is from $1,200 all-in (post, abutment, and crown), about 70 to 80% less than US pricing where the same implant typically costs $4,000 to $6,000. All-on-4 from $8,500 per arch versus $25,000 to $50,000 in the US. All-on-6 from $11,500 per arch versus $30,000 to $60,000.

How many trips do dental implants require?

Single-tooth cases: two trips across six months. Trip 1 is 3 to 5 days for surgical placement of the titanium post. The implant heals and fuses with bone over six months at home. Trip 2 is 2 to 3 days for the abutment and final crown.

Full-arch cases (All-on-4 and All-on-6): three trips across twelve months. Phased loading and a final fitting visit add an extra trip and longer healing window. Your custom treatment plan walks through the exact dates.

What implant brand do you use?

BioHorizons, an American manufacturer based in Birmingham, Alabama, with 25+ years of clinical history and FDA approval. We pair BioHorizons titanium posts with ZirCAD Prime zirconia crowns from Ivoclar (the same brand line as our IPS e.max veneers). BioHorizons is widely used in US specialty practices and has documented 95%+ ten-year success rates. We do not substitute generic or private-label implants.

How long do dental implants last?

The titanium post is designed to last a lifetime, with documented success rates above 95% at 10 years and above 90% at 20 years for BioHorizons. The ZirCAD Prime zirconia crown on top typically lasts 15–20+ years and can be replaced if needed without removing the implant.

Will I be without a tooth between trips?

No, in most cases. Where the case allows, we fit an immediate temporary tooth at the end of Trip 1, a temporary crown for a single front tooth or a temporary bridge for All-on-4. You fly home with a functional, presentable smile and return for the permanent crown on Trip 2. Some posterior cases skip the temporary because cosmetics aren't an issue.

Do I need a bone graft?

Roughly 30 to 40% of implant cases need some form of bone augmentation: either a small graft at the implant site, or a sinus lift for upper back teeth. We assess this with a CBCT 3D scan on Day 1 of Trip 1. If a graft is needed it is usually performed in the same visit, and the cost is quoted upfront in your treatment plan, never added later.

Is the surgery painful?

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic; most patients describe it as easier than a tooth extraction. Mild discomfort and swelling for 2 to 4 days after surgery, managed with over-the-counter ibuprofen. You'll be eating soft foods comfortably by day 3 and back to normal eating within two weeks.

Is it safe to get implants in Colombia?

Yes. Our clinic is INVIMA-licensed (Colombia's FDA equivalent), our surgical protocols meet international standards, and our materials are FDA-approved: BioHorizons (American-made implants) and ZirCAD Prime zirconia from Ivoclar. Many of our implant patients are referred by their US dentists. The dental community knows the work coming out of Medellín is the same quality as Beverly Hills.
