01 — What it is

The strongest cosmetic veneer made.

A zirconia veneer is a monolithic shell of dental-grade zirconium dioxide, milled from a single solid block, then hand-glazed for translucency and shade. It is the same ceramic used in joint replacements and dental implants, scaled down to a 0.5mm-thin facing. Its flexural strength is roughly 2–3× porcelain, which is why it survives the bite forces that crack e.max.

Milled, not pressed

Porcelain veneers are pressed or layered. Zirconia is milled, a CAD/CAM machine carves each veneer from a solid puck of high-strength ceramic. There is no firing seam, no internal layer boundary, no weak point. The whole veneer is one continuous crystal structure, which is where the strength comes from.

Lava 3M monolithic

We use Lava Esthetic and Lava Plus from 3M, the same monolithic zirconia specified by US prosthodontists treating high-bite-force cases at $2,500+ per tooth. Hand-glazed in our own lab to add the surface translucency and stain that monolithic zirconia needs to look natural under daylight.

Built for grinders

If you have bruxism, a heavy bite, contact-sport history, or you've fractured porcelain or composite before, zirconia is the only material that gives you a real margin of safety. We still make a night guard before you fly home, but with zirconia the consequences of forgetting it once are far smaller.

03 — Who it's for

Zirconia is the right call when strength matters most.

Zirconia wins on durability, chip resistance, and bruxism tolerance. If translucency or short-trip flexibility is the priority, see porcelain or composite instead.

  • You grind your teeth

Bruxism is the #1 cause of porcelain failure. Zirconia takes the same forces and keeps going, the strongest cosmetic veneer you can put in a mouth that grinds.

  • You've broken porcelain or composite before

If your last restorations cracked or chipped, the answer isn't another fragile material. Zirconia's flexural strength is roughly 2–3× porcelain, it's the upgrade your bite needs.

  • You want a 15+ year result on posterior teeth

Premolars and back-anteriors take the brunt of chewing force. Zirconia is purpose-built for that load, it lasts on the teeth where porcelain wears fastest.

  • Whitening hasn't worked

Tetracycline staining and severe fluorosis don't lift with whitening. Zirconia covers the underlying tooth completely, with no shadow showing through, and the new shade stays put.

  • You want a one-and-done full-arch redesign

For whole-mouth restorations, especially with implants or crowns alongside the veneers, zirconia gives you uniform strength and shade across every tooth in the bite.

  • You play contact sport or have an active life

Climbers, MMA, hockey, rugby, anyone whose teeth take impact occasionally. Zirconia's chip resistance is the closest thing to bulletproof a cosmetic veneer can offer.

Caring for zirconia, your first year and beyond.

Zirconia is the most forgiving veneer material on the market, but a few habits protect the bonding margin and keep the surface looking new for the full 15+ years.

01

The first 48 hours

Stick to soft foods to let the resin cement reach full strength. Cold sensitivity is normal for the first few days; it fades as the bond cures completely.

02

Daily brushing & flossing

Soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste, avoid charcoal and whitening pastes, they scratch the glaze. Floss once a day; the veneer-to-tooth margin is what keeps moisture and bacteria out.

03

Stains: zirconia wins

Coffee, red wine, dark teas, and tobacco do not stain zirconia, its glazed surface is non-porous. The bonding margin can pick up surface stains, which a routine 6-month cleaning removes completely.

04

Wear the night guard

Zirconia is hard, harder than your natural teeth on the opposing arch. The night guard isn't to protect the zirconia; it's to protect the teeth biting against it. Wear it every night.

05

Cleanings every 6 months

See your local hygienist twice a year. Tell them you have zirconia so they use a non-abrasive prophy paste. We coordinate with your US dentist if anything looks off at a routine cleaning.

06

If something feels off

Message us on WhatsApp the same day. A loose veneer caught early is a 30-minute re-bond. Multi-year warranty covers material defects and bonding failures, including a return flight if needed.

08 — Questions

Zirconia veneer questions, straight answers.

The questions we hear most about zirconia specifically.

How much do zirconia veneers cost in Colombia?

Zirconia veneers at Colombia Care Dental start at $289 per tooth, about 80–90% less than US pricing, where zirconia typically costs $2,000–$3,500 per tooth. A full set of 20 zirconia veneers is around $5,780 in Colombia versus $40,000–$70,000 in the US.

How long do zirconia veneers last?

15+ years with good care. Zirconia is the strongest cosmetic dental material available, it resists chipping better than porcelain and holds up under bruxism (grinding) where porcelain often fails.

Are zirconia veneers right for grinders?

Yes. Zirconia is the recommended material for patients with bruxism, a heavy bite, or a history of broken porcelain restorations. Its flexural strength is roughly 2–3× porcelain. We still recommend a night guard, but zirconia gives you a much larger margin for error.

Zirconia or porcelain, which looks more natural?

Porcelain (IPS e.max) has slightly better optical translucency and light-play in thin anterior cases, closer to natural enamel under bright light. Modern monolithic zirconia is more translucent than older zirconia and looks excellent in most cases, especially when our lab hand-glazes the surface. For full-arch redesigns where strength matters, zirconia wins. For ultra-thin anterior cases where translucency matters most, porcelain wins.

Do zirconia veneers stain?

No. Zirconia is a dense ceramic with a non-porous glazed surface, coffee, red wine, dark teas, and tobacco roll off. The bonding margin between the veneer and the tooth can pick up surface stains over time, which a routine cleaning every 6 months removes completely.

Are zirconia veneers reversible?

Zirconia veneers require minimal but real enamel reduction, typically 0.5mm, so they're considered an irreversible commitment to having veneers (or other restorations) on those teeth from then on. If you want a fully reversible option, see composite veneers instead.
