The moment of choosing between zirconia veneers or porcelain veneers can be daunting. Choosing between composite and porcelain is much easier for they are very different (Read our article about it here).
However, choosing between zirconia and porcelain is more difficult because the differences are more subtle. Both can last over decades, do not lose their color over time meaning that both materials will stay as white as the day we make them and both are very resistant, so how to choose between them? Let’s look at similarities first.
Similarities between the two materials
- Both materials keep their colors for decades. Indeed, one benefit of veneers is that you get to choose your smile’s color. In the case of porcelain and zirconium, you get to keep that color for upwards of 20 years.
- They take the same amount of time to get done, a week in our office and you will be smiling with a full set of veneers.
- They are each custom made in a lab which means that we first need to take impressions, send them to a lab that will make each veneer one by one before cementing them permanently onto your teeth.
Differences between the two materials
- Zirconia is the most resistant material in dentistry and in that fact lies the biggest difference between the two options. Zirconia is more resistant to teeth grinding, shocks and for that reason tend to last longer.
- Zirconia has evolved as a material and can now provide amazing naturally white shades however for people looking for the most natural looks, porcelain offers more options.
- Zirconia requires more tooth preparation meaning that they are slightly less reversible than porcelain might be.
